Nigellas are annual herbaceous plants with finely dissected foliage in the buttercup family, belonging to the genus nigella (from the Latin "nigella", itself from "niger" meaning black, in reference to the colour of the seeds of the species in this genus). There are around twenty species, all native to Eurasia. some were once eaten as seeds or spices, and are still eaten in some eastern countries or grown as ornamentals.
